Congress Hall map

Glancing through Verdi and Mahler’s compositions, one is struck by two things missing – Verdi has no symphony and Mahler no opera. But in actual fact both these great composers showed they could have done it. Verdi composed fantastic instrumental pieces, though always as part of an opera – except for his string quartette; and Mahler sketched out grandiose symphonic choral pieces, where he treats the voices with exceptional ability. Then too, Mahler was an outstanding orchestral conductor, and led operas by Verdi when he was music director at the Vienna Opera.
The challenge this evening’s program presents is how to make the most of the instrumental parts in Verdi’s operas, particularly when he shifts from the vocal art of belcanto to dramatic singing, as the script demands. The other aim is to highlight the vocal expressiveness and dramatic narration that, even in a purely instrumental symphony like his Fifth, Mahler manages to bring out to the fullest.
