L. BERNSTEIN, Divertimento for Orchestra F. CHOPIN, Piano Concerto No. 2 P.I. ČAJKOVSKIJ, Symphony No. 5
Opening concert The Stresa Festival’s inaugural concert features the European Union Youth Orchestra, led by Gianandrea Noseda, with the young Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho as soloist. Besides the tributes to Leonard Bernstein a century from his birth, the program pivots on two ‘classics’, Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5. Performed for the first time respectively in 1830 and 1888, they quite justifiably count among the two composers’ most famous orchestral pieces. Chopin’s maturity as a pianist and the outstanding expressive force of Tchaikovsky’s symphony offer the listener a range of color and orchestral dynamics that make for great effect.
