A. WEBERN, Variations op. 27
O. KNUSSEN, Variations
J.S. BACH, Goldberg Variations

The French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is widely sought after, and his performances meet with great acclaim in the main international concert halls. He is the 2019 Artist in Residence at the Festival. Tonight’s program is worked round Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a pillar of the history of keyboard music, and a basic entry ticket for whole generations of pianists. In line with one of the Festival’s themes, Bach our contemporary, the program starts in the early 20th century, with Anton Webern, moving on later to contemporaries like Oliver Knussen, who died recently, and George Benjamin. It lays a trace through musical languages that are only apparently separate.
This stimulating comparison will be played out in one of the most prestigious venues of the Festival – the Tapestry Hall in the Palazzo Borromeo on the Isola Bella.

This concert is part of the thematic area Bach, our contemporary.
