Petite messe solennelle

Petite messe solennelle

G Rossini, Petite messe solennelle

Thanks to a new critical edition by Davide Daolmi, Rossini’s masterpiece is being presented at the Fesrtival in its original version for two pianos and a harmonium, performed by internationally renowned interpreters, with the outstanding Coro Ghislieri, led by Giulio Prandi. Written in 1863 in Passy, when the composer was 71, the Messe is justifiably listed among the best of the Pesaro genius’s output, and is regarded as a sort of spiritual testament.
The style of the composition is original: Rossini harks back to Bach and counterpoint, and Neidermeyer’s palestrinean polyphony, but has the courage to insert a classical air for tenor, as Daolmi notes. The cast of singers has broad experience in baroque music and belcanto, and can boast unanimous success on the world’s greatest stages.
An interesting decision was to use authentic historical instruments, kindly provided by a Piedmontese collector. The Pleyel piano dated 1855 was one of Rossini’s favorites – and an Erard is dated 1838. The exceptional duo Francesco Corti and Cristiano Gaudio will be playing them.
