BACH SOLO SUITE II
Insurmountable reasons beyond the artist’s control forced Thomas Demenga to withdraw from the two concerts. Andrei Ioniță, gold medal winner at the Tchaikovsky International Competition, substitutes for Thomas Demenga in the performance of Bach’s Solo C cello Suites.
J.S. Bach
Suite n. 5 in do min. BWV 1011
Suite n. 4 in mi bem. magg. BWV 1010
Suite n. 3 in do magg. BWV 1009
For the cello Bach creates from scratch a whole new expressive universe. He chooses the form of the suite of dances without altering the standard pattern: allemanda, corrente, sarabanda, giga, are preceded by a prelude and with a pair of Galanterien (minuets or bourrées or gavotte) interspersed between the third and fourth dance. The full performance of the Suites is split into two evenings and is a key feature of the concerts of the Festival: set in the suggestive Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso in Leggiuno, the tradition is renewed in offering Bach’s masterpiece through different interpreters each time.
Andrei Ioniță has collaborated with numerous European orchestras, including the Munich Philharmonic, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the State Philharmonic of Nürnberg, and the Czech Philharmonia. His musical prowess has taken him on tours to the United States, where he has performed with the Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, San Diego, and Grand Rapids symphony orchestras.
Andrei Ioniță’s exceptional talent makes him a versatile and sought-after chamber music interpreter. In this field, he has collaborated with Martha Argerich, Christian Tetzlaff, Sergei Babayan, and Steven Isserlis, among others. He is frequently invited to world-class concert halls and festivals in the classical music world. “Music develops magically and flows toward the audience, where it speaks directly to the soul,” says Ioniță. The Times of London called him “one of the most exciting cellists to have emerged in the last decade”; British Gramophone described him as “a cellist endowed with extraordinary technical skill and musical imagination, devoted to the music of our time.”
