This evening offers the very first performance of a work composed specially for the Festival. It combines two of the main features of this year’s program: the importance of Lake Maggiore and its islands, and the connections between classical music and ‘other’ contemporary styles.  
The Suite for a Lake was composed by Simone Locarni, this year’s artiste in residence.  In response to a suggestion from the artistic director Mario Brunello, Locarni composed this original ‘homage’ to Lake Maggiore, a theme that is central and dear in his own life and music. The Suite will be played after Shostakovich’s Quartet no. 4, one of Simone’s reference works while he drafted his composition, and which offers a subtle but substantial play of references.
The musicians – the Quartetto Noŭs, with Fulvio Sigurtà on the trumpet and Locarni on the piano, reflect the dual nature of the Lake, which links a province and a region, and two nations, also marking a frontier. This led to the idea of combining two worlds that are both linked and separate – classical music and jazz. You can imagine this as if the two sides of the Lake were looking at each other, having known each other for ages, and are separated here only by the stretch of water to cross.
