The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin (Akamus) was founded in Berlin in 1982 and is considered today one of the principal chamber orchestras in the world, playing historically backed music. In four decades the orchestra has repeatedly demonstrated its versatility, in brilliant concert projects. It has made a significant contribution to the ‘re-discovery’ of the music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann.
In Stresa they will play one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s best-known works: the six Brandenburg Concertos, written at Köthen between 1717 and 1723, and dedicated to the Margrave Cristian Ludvig of Brandenburg-Schwedt. The six concertos differ slightly in their instrumentation, movements and styles. Besides the concerto grosso, of Italian origin, other forms include the solo concerto, chamber music, sonata, and group concerto. The combination of instruments too is unusual: there are horns, a trumpet, straight flute, and others. Bach’s Concerti demand considerable technical ability from the musicians, apart from the sensitivity always required for a group performance.
