BACH SOLO SUITE (I)

Johann Sebastian Bach invented a whole expressive universe for the cello, out of nothing! He used the suite of dances as the form, never losing sight of the standard order of allemanda, corrente, sarabanda, giga, with a prelude to start with, and slotting in a couple of galanterien (minuets or bourrées or gavottes) between the third and fourth dances.
Played in two evenings, the whole set of Suites is now a regular feature of the Festival. In the stunning setting of the Santa Caterina del Sasso hermitage built into the cliff at Leggiuno, it has become a ‘tradition’ to offer Bach’s masterpiece by different interpreters each year.
Ditta Rohmann is famed for her versatility. Besides playing solo and in chamber concerts throughout Europe, she dedicates herself to improvisations of world music, dance, and recently has appeared as an actress.
She has worked with prestigious musicians and orchestras, her broad repertoire spanning baroque music to contemporary composers.
