Opening concert: to the roots of music with Vivaldi and Haydn.

#antiqua: We go back to the roots of music with Vivaldi and Haydn for the August opening concert.

Haydn, the father of the classic symphony, is the subject of the project Haydn2032.
In the lead-up to the 300th anniversary of Joseph Haydn’s birth in 2032, the Joseph Haydn Foundation in Basel is organising, producing and financing the performance and recording of all 107 of the composer’s symphonies by Il Giardino Armonico and Basel Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, one of the most highly-respected specialists in baroque, early classical and classical music, with its project Haydn2032. Between the autumn of 2014 and 2032, all of Haydn’s symphonies are to be performed and recorded in the course of nineteen concert seasons, with two projects per year.
The recordings are released on CD and in a luxury vinyl collector’s edition in book form. The French group Outhere Music acts as partner for the recordings.

Thanks to Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico during the August opening concert we shall have the pleasure of hearing two of Haydn’s most important symphonies, no. 52 and no. 44 – Trauer, the Funeral Symphony. This evening they will be coupled unusually with two of Vivaldi’s concerts, for strings and for violin. The soloist, unanymously appreciated, is the talented Russian violinist Dmitry Smirnov, a winner of prestigious international contests.
The Giardino Armonico is recognised internationally for its performances of Vivaldi’s music. Rediscovering and highlighting the most ‘innovative’ features of this 18th century composer Giovanni Antonini is quite possibly responsible for the ‘new’ Vivaldi, conquering young audiences in particular throughout the world, specially in Europe.

ALBUM: meet the artists!
Giovanni Antonini is one of the musicians who appears in the address book of Outhere Music, which this year is sharing with the Festival a cultural project and special partnership, selected in particular for our shared ideals. The conductor of the Giardino Armonico features in fact in the first Album, and will chat with Charles Adriaenssen, chairman of Outhere Music. Don’t forget to book!!
